State quarter and semifinal recaps

May 31, 2009

by Jim Jicha

If you were in a hurry yesterday, the state volleyball tournament was not the place to be. The tournament started at 11:00 AM and the final point went down around 10:40 PM. In what may have been the most competitive initial round ever, three matches went five games, one went four and each of the straight set contests had an overtime game.

St. Charles kicked off the action by advancing to the state final for the second time in school history with a 25-17, 25-12, 18-25, 25-16 win over Roger Bacon, avenging a 19-25, 25-15, 16-18 loss to the Spartans in the Buckeye Classic. St. Charles finished runner-up to Thomas Worthington in 1990.

Roger Bacon held respective 8-7 and 6-5 leads in games one and two. The Cardinals used an 11-2 run to pull away in the first, and in game two they won going away after edging ahead 11-9. Roger Bacon roared from an 8-8 tie to a 20-10 game three margin, and held off St. Charles from there. The Spartans scored the first point of game four, but St. Charles went up 3-1, and after a 5-5 tie they scored four straight, eventually leading 19-12. St. Charles scored the final four after Roger Bacon rallied to 21-16.

The Cardinals will face defending state Archbishop Hoban for the title. The Knights fought off taller Chaminade-Julienne 18-25, 25-23, 13-25, 25-23, 15-9 to advance. Hoban, which never led in games one or three, rallied from 17-21 in game two, and 12-18 and 19-21 in game four. They led all the way in the tiebreaker, and scored the final four after the Eagles closed to 11-9.Hoban beat St. Charles 21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 15-13 midseason, but lost to them 22-25, 18-25 in the Buckeye Classic.

Elder downed Mt. Vernon 25-16, 25-20, 26-24. The Panthers led all of the first game, and most of the second. Mt. Vernon broke ahead 8-7 and 9-8 in game two, and they remained within striking distance after Elder retook an 11-9 edge. The Yellow Jackets took it to Elder in game three and led most of the time. After the Panthers forced ties at 9, 10 and 11 they flew ahead 18-12. But Elder pecked away, took their first lead at 24-23, and after one more tie, put the game and match away.

Archbishop Moeller had more trouble with Hilliard Darby than in their opening round 25-19, 25-17, 25-15 victory in the Centerville Elite. The Crusaders prevailed 26-24, 25-18, 25-20, despite some impressive terminations and defensive maneuvers by Darby. Moeller led most of game one but could never shake the Panthers who tied at 22 and 24. Darby led 12-8 in game two, but was undone by an 11-2 Crusader run. And Darby was up a good part of game three, starting at 9-8. After a couple of lead changes, they moved further ahead 19-16 before Moeller closed out with a 8-1 run.

Darby and Mt. Vernon have only three seniors between them.

Centerville rallied to nip St. Ignatius 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-11 in a two hour struggle that featured a plethora of demolitions and booming blocks. Things did not look good for the Elks in game one, however, when Honorable Mention All-Ohio outside Sean Hayes went down with an ankle injury. They were trailing 8-7 at the time, and while they moved ahead by a point at times, St. Ignatius pulled away at the end. The Wildcats built a 12-6 lead in game two, only to see Centerville score seven straight. But, trailing 18-16, St. Ignatius began a slow rally, using mini-runs of 2, 3, 2 and 2 to win. Centerville, however, led all of game three save for a 0-2 start and a 4-4 tie. The Elks led by as much as five, although they never shook the Wildcats who rallied with three to close to 24-23.

Centerville lead early in game four, but St. Ignatius used a five point run to go up 12-7 and held the lead to 18-16. At that point the Elks rallied for five and point traded to the finish. The Elks never trailed in game five and blew the game open from 3-3 to 12-5.

St. Edward avenged a 29-31, 22-25 loss to Lakota West in the Beavercreek Quad with a 25-25, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11 victory in another match that went close to two hours. Game one went back and forth with seven lead changes and 15 ties before St. Edward scored three straight to win. The teams traded the lead three times to a 4-4 tie in game two. But then the Firebirds scored four and never trailed, although St. Edward retied at 13 and stayed within two until Lakota West ran off the final four points to win.

Game three went back and forth to 9-9, until the Eagles scored six straight. And when West closed to 17-16, St. Edward went on a 7-1 run and staved off a rally that ended on a volley in which West players went to the bleachers for a save.

West never trailed in game four and led all the way after a 5-5 tie. But with the score 23-16, the Eagles ran off five straight to make things interesting. The Firebirds continued in game five with leads of 1-0, 3-1 and 6-3, But the Eagles tied at 7 and 8 and surged to a 14-9 lead.

In today’s semifinal, Elder will face Centerville while Moeller will play St. Edward. Elder defeated Centerville early in the year 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20, and Moeller downed St. Edward 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 in the Centerville Elite.
