Boys Volleyball 2010 Schedules posted for: Centerville, Hilliard Davidson, Kettering Fairmont, Lakota West Highlights (2009) All Region Awards (2009) Girls Volleyball Volley for the Cure 2009 The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association in conjunction with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation are sponsoring Volley for the Cure, an event to increase awareness of breast cancer among high school students, staff and the community, and to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. This year's theme is "Pass, Set, Cure." The event is now in its third year as a state-wide initiative. Last year over $300,000 was raised state-wide. Riverside had ended Mentor's streak of 21 straight district titles in the semifinal. The Wayne County Athletic League flexed its muscles last night as Smithville knocked out Orrville 25-16, 25-22, 25-23, 30-28, led by Jenna Pew with 28 kills, 15 assists, 13 digs and two blocks. The Smithies thus avenged losses to Orrville in last year's district semifinal and in the title match of this year's Lima Bath Invitational. But that wasn't all. WCAL runner-up Dalton also advanced with a heart stopping 26-24, 25-23, 29-27 win over Garfield Heights Trinity, overcoming game one deficits of 23-17 and 24-21. Padua Franciscan advanced to the regional with a hard fought 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18 win over Beaumont, which was somewhat easier than three weeks ago when Padua had to go five with the Blue Streaks. But the Bruins still had to work hard to overcome Beaumont's phenomenal defense, which repeatedly thwarted several blasts from Leary and others. Kaitlyn Leary paced the Bruins with 26 kills, while Meredith Bolmeyer and freshman Mary Djukic put up 24 and 15 assists, respectively. Libero Lauren Goebel led the back row with 18 digs and 21 serve receives and the Bruins' top server was Salina DeFranco. Sophomore outside Nicole Trapp, stepping up to help Christie Fritsche who was coming off an illness, had a career night with 16 kills, and when Leary wasn't in front row, she was. Beaumont was led by middle Amanda Videmsek, sophomore outside Midori Harrison, who had some great somersault digs, setter Abby Cvelbar, and libero Regina Zale. 10/29/09 - Huron tops Bishop Hartley in cross-division match of ranked conference champions Gilmour Academy heads into state tourney play with first ever Stow Invitational crown Hubbard tunes up for state tourney with tri-match win over Massillon Perry, Canal Fulton Northwest 10/17/09 - Gilmour Academy won the Stow Invitational Volleyball tournament on its third try, defeating Fairview Park 25-17, 25-19, Tiffin Columbian 25-21, 25-16 and Lake Catholic 28-26, 25-20. Solid team-play highlighted the Lancer's day as multiple players contributed to the championship. The Lancers committed but seven serve-receive errors all day which allowed them to execute their offense and keep the opposition on the defensive. Tournament MVP, senior Mary Kramer, led the Lancers with 24 kills on the day. She was 28-30 in serve-receive, and had 4 blocks and 18 digs. All-tournament junior setter dished out 62 assists and had 17 digs. Senior libero Sarah Seidlak had 28 digs, was 34-37 in serve-receive, and served 14 with five aces. Sophomore outside hitter, Maddie Kosar contributed 26 service-points, and was 30-32 in serve-receive. Junior Meghan Kramer added 15 kills and Sophomore Maria Cup chipped in with eight. Tiffin Columbian topped Wooster for third. Elsewhere, Huron prevailed over Division II power Bishop Hartley 25-15, 25-21, 25-20 in an intriguing matchup of the Sandusky Bay Conference and Central Catholic League champions. The winning Tigers served aggressively and hit their spots, and setters Melissa Moberg and Devon Grendow were a stellar 74-75. Radford University recruit Jesse Miedema hit three cannon shots down the left to set the stage early as Huron jumped in front 8-1 in game one. She and junior middle/outside Devon Keonig led with 15 and nine kills, respectively. Libero Taryn Graham had 21 digs and was 21-23 in serve receive. Sophomore Katlyn Sommer contributed three blocks. This past Thursday, Huron won the Sandusky Bay title for a record 11th straight time, taking the title outright when Clyde upended Milan Edison. Hubbard beat Massillon Perry and host Canal Fulton Northwest to finish the regular season 22-0. The Eagles were led offensively by outside hitter Jackie Carlisle and middle Lexi Starheim. Perry beat Hubbard in the first game of their match and was only trailing 3-2 in game two when Carlisle served nine points, including six aces, to blow the game open. Magnificat rallied from a 1-2 game deficit to beat host Toledo St. Ursula 25-16, 22-25, 21-25, 25-14, 15-10. Cincinnati Ursuline finally had a close match, at least for two games. The Lions downed Lakota West 27-25, 27-25, 25-13 to finish 22-0. Tuscarawas Valley also ended at 22-0 after handing Tuscarawas Central Catholic its second loss of the season. 10/16/09 - Claymont takes down host River View, clinches East Central Ohio League title Bishop Hartley broke a first place tie with Bishop Ready and claimed its third outright Central Catholic League title in five years with a straight set win over the Knights. The Hawks shared the crown with Bishop Watterson in 2006 and won outright in 2005. Elsewhere in Central District, Dublin Coffman concluded the regular season with a 22-0 record. The Shamrocks are 60-1 in sets. That beats Marion Local, which finished 60-2 after a four game win last night over Fort Recovery. Big Walnut downed Pickerington North in a match between Ohio Capital Conference division champions. In the northeast, Smithville captured its 19th Wayne County Athletic League volleyball crown last night with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-14 win over second place Dalton. Senior outside hitters Allysa Horst and Alex Leister led the Smithies with 29 total kills. Elsewhere in the WCAL, Apple Creek Waynedale rallied from 0-2 to defeat West Salem Northwestern for the first time in at least four years, 23-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 18-16. Middle hitter Ellie Shoup paced the Golden Bears’ attack with 18 kills. The triad of Orrville, Mansfield Madison and Lexington share the Ohio Cardinal Conference championship after splitting matches with each other and beating Wooster, West Holmes and everyone else. Berkshire knocked off Cuyahoga Heights in a battle between Cuyahoga Valley Conference division champions. In the northwest, Toledo St. Ursula defeated Toledo Central Catholic in three for the City League tournament title. The two teams advanced to the final by beating Oregon Clay and Notre Dame Academy, respectively. Bowling Green downed Anthony Wayne to finish a perfect 14-0 in the Northern Lakes League and claim its sixth straight title. Hopewell-Loudon stopped New Riegel in four and won the Midland Athletic League outright. Tiffin Columbian also won in four, over second place Norwalk, to garner its second straight Northern Ohio League crown. Otsego and Eastwood both won last night and tied for the Suburban Lakes League title. Otsego beat Eastwood on Tuesday to avenge an earlier loss. On Tuesday, Archbishop Alter became the first Ohio school this season to defeat Bishop Fenwick. The Knights won 25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 25-15, 15-10 despite having no subs other than junior varsity players available. 10/15/09 - CORRECTION - Contrary to what we reported, Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame defeated Mother of Mercy last week. The Cougars lost to Louisville Mercy last weekend. 10/15/09 - Kansas Lakota put a damper on New Riegel’s title hopes, handing the host Blue Jackets their first loss of the season 19-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 15-13. Hopewell-Loudon beat Fostoria St. Wendelin on the road and now leads the Midland Athletic League by one match. New Riegel can still claim a piece of the title if it beats Hopewell-Loudon tonight. Marion Local clinched at least a tie for the Midwest Athletic League title with an impressive 25-22, 25-13, 25-18 road win over Versailles. The stingy Flyers have yielded more than 20 points in only eight sets, and they have only lost one set, to Rockford Parkway. Cincinnati Ursuline looked impressive in beating Mt. Notre Dame 25-17, 25-15, 25-19on Tuesday. The Lions will face Lakota West Saturday. Lodi Cloverleaf clinched the Suburban League with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-20 decision over second place Wadsworth. Tiffin Columbian has secured at least a tie for the Northern Ohio League title. The 12-1 Tornadoes will go for an outright championship tonight when they host the only team to beat them in league play, 11-2 Norwalk. Columbian clinched the title on the road Tuesday by rallying from 14-7 in game five to beat Fostoria 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 19-17. Norwalk lost to Fostoria 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 13-25, 15-10 on October 1, and previously dropped a 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 11-25, 17-15 to Shelby. 10/12/09 - Hubbard defeated Salem in front of 1600 fans last Wednesday in four sets. Youngstown State recruit Jackie Carlisle led the Eagles with 27 kills. All-Ohio junior libero Dawn Lingenfelter, who changes matches with her superb defensive plays and passing ability, also played a key role in the win. Hubbard travels to Canal Fulton Northwest this weekend for a tri-match with Massillion Perry. Perry upset Salem last Saturday. 10/10/09 - Cincinnati Ursuline dominates strong Northeast Ohio Power Volleyball Tournament field 10/10/09 - Bishop Fenwick clinched its first league title of any kind, shared or outright, in 27 years by defeating Chaminade-Julienne on the road 10-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-18 and Dayton Carroll. The Falcons clinched the GGCL North title outright with a GGCL record of 9-0. Fenwick is currently 17-3 overall and ranked #12 in the state in D-III. Their three losses came in the Louisville Invitational. Chaminade and Archbishop Alter are tied for second. Brecksville took sole possession of first in the Southwestern Conference with a 27-25, 25-22, 17-25, 28-26 road win over Amherst Steele. The coming week presents see some league showdowns. Marion Local and Versailles each advanced to 7-0 and will meet in a Midwest Athletic Conference battle at Versailles on Tuesday. New Riegel and Hopewell-Loudon, currently unbeaten in the Midland Athletic League, will face off on Thursday, but must first get past Kansas Lakota and Fostoria St. Wendelin, respectively, on Tuesday. Bishops Hartley and Ready will tangle Thursday for the Central Catholic League crown. 10/9/09 - Uhrichsville Claymont moved to 10-0 and clinched at least a tie for the East Central Ohio League title with a hard fought 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23 road win over Warsaw River View. The Mustangs were led on the evening by junior outside hitter Makenzie Ripley. With a fifth game looming, Ripley blasted a cross-court kill from the left, after the Black Bears had thwarted her on the right, to break a 23-all deadlock. She ended the match with a jump serve ace that lined down the middle and was shanked into the rear wall. This was the first time the Mustangs had beaten River View since the latter joined the ECOL in 2004. River View has won the league in volleyball every year. The GGCL is top to bottom the strongest league in Ohio and Seton is proof. The last place 1-7 Saints gave top ranked unbeaten Ursuline its biggest scare of the season Tuesday before succumbing 16-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-27. In mid-September, Seton beat Padua Franciscan, currently ranked number one in Division II, at Magnificat's Fall Showcase. Speaking of Padua , the Bruins nipped Beaumont 23-25, 25-12, 20-25, 25-15, 15-11 on Saturday, helped by a sizzling performance from libero Lauren Goebel.
